Homemade Dog Food

Hungry?

My retriever babies are very hungry for many things – attention, exercise, sniffing all sorts of things, the more rotten and disgusting the better, and most importantly, FOOD.  They love to eat, I love to eat, and I’m super picky about what I put in my body so I had to be with them as well.  For myself I have attempted to best understand how my body functions and eat foods that help it function best.

My dogs are meant to eat meat – raw meat.  I spent hours of research, asked many people questions, watched countless videos and then experimented with recipes.  It took me over a year to find one that really works for my girls.  And I do change it up a little bit each month, depending on what kind of wild game I might have recently acquired, or what I have on hand at the time.  Here are a few extremely valuable resources I used to create the menu – Real Food for Healthy Dogs and Cats Cookbook by Dr. Karen Becker and Unlocking the Canine Ancestral Diet: Healthier Dog Food the ABC Way by Steve Brown.   I was also able to consult with a pet nutritionist who helped us take our menu and tweak it to be just what my two girls needed.

Making my dog’s food is not easy, quick or cheap.  But neither are they.  And I try to not eat food that is described in that way either.  But in all reality now that I have been doing it for a few years, I have a rhythm down and it really doesn’t take that much time.  Click here to see my general recipe.
